Grants Review Committee
I taught at Western Washington University for 38 years, retiring in 2023. Volunteering is important to me and I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the mission of Wild Whatcom.
Courtney Lyons
Governance Committee
Courtney loves nature and stories-a combo that led her to get a doctoral degree in fisheries anthropology. Feel free to ask her about rural Alaska, fishing politics, and the time she ruined a scene they were filming for the Deadliest Catch.
These days she spends most of her time working from home, but Wild Whatcom programs provide an easy way to sneak back into nature.

I'm inspired by and enjoy Wild Whatcom programs and all the nature Washington has to offer. I have a background in law enforcement, social services, and have been in the non-profit sector for decades. I believe together we can make a positive impact in the community. You can find me enjoying nature and spending time with my dogs.

Sarah Fowler
Outreach & Events Committee
Sarah came to Whatcom County for graduate school in 2005 and never left! After 10 years in Bellingham and a couple of kids, she bought 10 acres and retreated to the county life in Custer, WA. Here, she runs a small glamping operation along with her husband, Jake and her four young kids. Two of them are in Explorers Club! You can rent her cozy, wooded spaces in the spring/summer/fall to connect with nature and unplug from the busy-ness of daily life.
Sarah loves to practice Pilates, meditation, and Zumba! She also loves to travel and has taken her family to Mexico, Costa Rica, and Portugal for extended trips. But the main thing that truly lights her up is...CONNECTION. She creates it in everything she does. Sarah is also driven by the pursuit of joy and simplicity, meaningful relationships, PNW summers, epic dance parties, and music from the Beatles.

Sarah Gardner
Governance Committee
Sarah was drawn to volunteer with Wild Whatcom because she believe that our exposure to, and love for, nature will be our salvation as individuals and collectively as humans. That, and the incredible folks at Wild Whatcom, of course!
From Baba Dioum, Senegalese forester and activist:
“ In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand and we will understand only what we’re taught.”
